Standing-Room Only on Flights?

November 21, 2012 by Chiranth Nataraj

Budget UK airline Ryanair has been in the news on numerous occasions for its often unorthodox approach to marketing, customer service and travel. But Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary recently hit the headlines with his new travel idea – standing room only in certain sections of the plane. Budget travelers could spend as little as $1 to travel on Ryanair’s European short-haul flights if they were prepared to stand all the way.

However, as you might expect, the plan is not approved by airline safety regulators and travel insurance providers. Current legislation insists that passengers wear seatbelts during a flight and a standing-room-only section would fall short of meeting this requirement. O’Leary claims that seatbelts are unnecessary and don’t make flying any safer. He says that seatbelts don’t save passengers in a crash and can be removed while the safety of the airline is unaffected.

He added that flights across Europe are not affected by much turbulence so the argument that seatbelts reduce injuries caused by turbulence doesn’t apply to his routes. The idea of cheap flights for passengers that stand is popular with many travelers, particularly people who want to cut the cost of their European vacation. Many travelers in England stand for hours on inter-city trains when they are busy and all seats are filled. A 50-minute flight to Spain, supporters say, is bearable even when standing if you can fly for $1.

Other travelers disagree and are unsure that Ryanair is taking flying in the right direction. The company already makes passengers pay for food and drink onboard, plus cabin luggage and seat allocation. A cheap ticket becomes more expensive when you have to pay for extras that other airlines include in the cost of the fare. What do you think? Would you fly for $1 if it meant you had to stand up? Or do you prefer your in-flight comforts and are prepared to pay a little extra for them?

Preventing DVT on Flights

November 20, 2012 by Chiranth Nataraj

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, has been recognized as a flight health problem since 1946. What is DVT and how can you help prevent it? the condition causes blood clots in the blood of the deep veins. This clotting usually occurs in the calf. If you are affected by DVT you will feel an intense, deep pain in the affected area and should immediately go to the ER or seek medical help on-board the plane. DVT can be fatal if a part of the clot breaks away and travels to the lungs. Remember that DVT may occur up to two weeks or more after you take a long car journey or fly. You may experience redness or swelling in the affected leg which is more painful when you walk or stand up.

You are more at risk of DVT if you are sitting immobile for long periods of time and you are also in an “at risk” group. This includes having surgery in the month before traveling, you have a family history of DVT, you are receiving treatment for cancer, you are obese, you have varicose veins, or you are pregnant. Older people are also more at risk of DVT.

If you are at risk, try to move and exercise at least every hour when you are flying. You can exercise your calf muscles when you sit down by doing leg exercises, rotations, elevations and twists. You can also use equipment for leg exercises. Don’t forget to get up, walk around the plane, stretch and generally extend the muscles every hour. Ask your healthcare adviser about exercises and look in the in-flight information or magazine. Airline staff can also help you with tips and advice on exercises in-flight.

Wear properly measured support hosiery for preventing DVT. The other clothing you wear should be loose fitting and cool. Make sure you drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration, which can put you at greater risk of DVT. Avoid tea, coffee, and alcohol. Remain hydrated before, during and after the flight. If you are worried, take advice from your doctor. The risk of DVT is small but important. Taking a few simple steps can cut this risk and help you enjoy a healthier flight.

Legal Principles of Insurance You Must Know If You Are Traveling To USA

November 19, 2012 by Chiranth Nataraj

The transfer of the risk of a loss from one entity to another in exchange for payment is called insurance. Therefore, insurance is a form of risk management, principally used to prevaricate against the risk of a conditional, doubtful loss. An insurance carrier or insurer is a company selling the insurance while the policy holder or the insured is the entity or the individual buying the insurance policy. Premium is the amount to be charged for a particular amount of insurance coverage.

In an insurance contract, the insured will assume a guaranteed and known relatively small loss in form of payment to the insurer in exchange for the insurer’s promise to indemnify (compensate) the insured in the event of personal or financial loss. You as the insured will thereby receive a contract known as the insurance policy that contains the circumstances and conditions on which you, being the insured will be compensated financially.

Insurance contract entails collecting funds from numerous exposures or insured entities to pay for the losses that some may incur. Therefore, the insured entities are protected from risk for a certain amount of money that depend upon the severity and frequency of the event happening. However, the risk insured against must meet certain distinctiveness for it to be insurable. Although, insurance is a major part of of financial services and a commercial enterprise, individual entities can equally self-insure by saving money for possible future losses.

The Legal Principles of Insurance
There are usually some basic legal requirements when a company insures an individual entity. Therefore, common cited legal principles of insurance are as highlighted below;

Indemnity
This means that in the event of certain losses up to the insured’s interest, the insurance company compensates or indemnifies.

Insurable Interest
Irrespective of whether property or insurance on a person is involved, insurable interest must exist. The theory necessitates that the insured have a “venture” in the damage or loss to the life or property being insured. What is “venture” or stake will be determined by the insurance type involved as well as the relationship between the persons and the property ownership. What distinguishes insurance from gambling is the requirement of an insurable interest.

Utmost Good Faith
In this case, it is mandatory that the insured disclose all material facts relating to the insurance contract. The utmost good faith principle stipulated that the insured and the insurer are bound by a good faith bond of fairness and honesty.

Contribution
Insurers with similar commitments or obligations to the insured contribute in the indemnification in accordance with some methods.

Subrogation
This simply means that the insurer gets hold of legal rights to pursue recoveries on behalf of the insured.

Causa Proxima
This is also known as proximate or the peril cause of the loss, and must be covered under the insuring agreement of the policy which must not exclude the dominant cause.

Mitigation
In case of mitigation, the owner of the asset must make an effort to keep loss to a minimum as if the asset was not insured, in case of any casualty or loss.

What is an I-94 Card?

November 16, 2012 by Chiranth Nataraj

When you visit the USA as a non-US citizen or non-resident you need to follow the entry and exit rules very carefully. The United States has a very strict set of procedures to go into and leave the country and it is important that you, as a visitor, pay attention to the procedure and keep within the law. This will save any unnecessary questioning or delays this time you are in the United States, and also any times in the future when you visit the country. The I-94 card is one way in which the United States monitors and tracks the arrival and departure of temporary visitors, immigrants and others.

You receive the I-94 card when you arrive in the United States. It is also called the I-94 form or permit, or the arrival and departure record. This card is given to each and every person who comes into the States as a non-immigrant and non-resident. You need to fill out the card when you arrive into the United States. When you pass through immigration the official at the desk will staple part of the card into your passport.

This I-94 card is important because it is a documentation of the date of your arrival into the United States. It also documents the date you leave America. When you are in the United States you should try to take care of the I-94 document, to save yourself trouble and inconvenience. You return the form when you leave the United States.

If you happen to lose the I-94 card, or your passport, while you are traveling in the United States you must have both documents replaced as soon as possible. You can file a report with the police and then request a form to document the replacement of your document. If airport staff do not take your I-94 back when you leave the United States ask them to take it from you as you should submit your form as soon as you exit the country. If you still have the document when you arrive home you need to send it back with proof that you left the country, such as an arrival stamp from your home country in your passport or your used boarding pass from your flight. If you have any questions when you are leaving the US, ask airline staff for advice.

What Are The General Theories Behind Immigration?

November 15, 2012 by Chiranth Nataraj

The moving of people or animals and settling down in another different region or country to which they are not native is referred to as immigration. The purpose of immigration include; breeding, temperature, political, economic, family re-unification, poverty, natural disaster or even voluntary desire to change one’s environment.

One of the immigration theories differentiate between Push as well as Pull. The push factors are the most important motives for emigration from your home country. Differentials in wage rates are however usual in the case of economic migration – labor migration in most cases. In a situation where the wage value in your new country is far above that of your home country, you may decide to migrate; in as much the costs are not too high for you to bear.

In the 19th century, the immigrant flow of the U.S. economic expansion was increased and in effect, about 20 percent of the US population was foreign born against today’s value of 10 percent that makes up a considerable amount of the entire labor force. People that were considered poor from under-developed nations can enjoy far higher standards of living in developed that that of their country of origin.

Costs of immigration include; the implicit costs, price of ticket, loss of community ties and lost work time. All these costs play key role in the pull of emigrants away from their home country. However, travel time and costs decreased dramatically between 18th and early 20th century as transport technology improved. In the 18th century, travel across the Atlantic used to take up to 5 weeks, but it took a mere 8 days around the time of the 20th century. In immigration theory, the immigration rates tend to be higher when the opportunity cost is lower.

In a contract of employment, immigration and emigration are sometimes mandatory. Therefore, workers of transactional corporations as well as religious missionaries, the diplomatic service and international non-governmental organizations – who are frequently called ‘expatriates” are expected to work overseas by definitions and their conditions for employment are quite the same or better than those applying in the host country for the same work.

You can migrate for personal reasons depending on relationship such as going to stay with a partner or family, but in a few instances, you may desire to immigrate to a new country as a transferred patriotism. The avoidance of criminal justice like arrest is a personal motivation. Nevertheless, if a crime is internationally recognized, this type of immigration and emigration is not normally legal, although criminals may disguise their identities of finding other loopholes to evade detection.

Barriers to Immigration

There can be barriers to immigration and they come in legal, natural and social forms. Immigrants leave everything familiar such as their family, culture, friends and support network when leaving their country. They not only liquidate their assets at a large loss, but also incur high expenses of moving abroad. As if that is not enough, they are also confronted with many uncertainties like where to live, searching for work, new laws, language or accent issues, new culture norms, likely racism as well as other exclusionary behavior towards them and their family. These barriers will limit international migration to a great extent.
