Four Seasons in Yellowstone National Park

December 14, 2012 by Chiranth Nataraj

Up to three million people visit Yellowstone National Park every year, and the majority of these visitors come in the summer. But the US’s first National Park is not only a summer destination – more and more people are enjoying the park in winter, spring and fall. Yellowstone is a year-round destination but you do need to plan in advance if you are traveling to the park in the off season.

If you want to visit the park in winter you can, but you need to be visiting with a commercial guide or on a snowcoach tour. Private snowmobiles are not allowed in the park. The winter snowmobile season begins in the middle of December and ends in March. During the winter most of the roads are closed to motor vehicles because of the heavy snow.

Spring season begins in March once the snowplows have been in to clear the first stretches of road. Most of the popular roads begin to open in the middle of April, with a lot waiting until May. Be careful of weather changes during the spring – the climate can be temperamental and you need to pack accordingly.

Come in summer and most roads are open and you can visit all areas of the park, save for any closed due to temporary road works, weather events or other maintenance work. During fall you may encounter snow storms and icy weather which means you need to use snow tires or chains. Some roads may be closed depending on the weather. If you are planning to travel outside the main tourist season in summer you need to plan your trip in advance, and check the opening times of lodging and other facilities. For camping in spring and fall, take the correct clothing and be prepared for bad weather.

Melatonin to Beat Jet Lag?

December 11, 2012 by Chiranth Nataraj

If you frequently fly for business or pleasure you will be familiar with jet lag. Jet lag affects everybody differently but it produces symptoms like fatigue, disorientation, sleeplessness and stomach problems. If you fly a lot you’re sure to wish there was a cure for jet lag. Have you ever tried the supplement melatonin? Melatonin has recently been touted as a jet lag remedy, but does it work?

Melatonin is produced naturally as a hormone by the pineal gland and it is essential for your body’s sleeping and waking patterns. Melatonin helps regulate what is called your circadian rhythm – when you wake up and when you go to sleep. Flying across time zones disrupts your circadian rhythms, causing irregularities in the times you feel sleepy and the times you are wide awake. In effect, the amount of daylight you are exposed to affects your internal clock.

People use melatonin as a counter against jet lag because the hormone naturally brings on sleep when it is created by the body. However, can melatonin work when it is taken as a supplement? Some travelers take a dose of the hormone when they travel in order to try to trick their circadian rhythms into thinking it is time to go to sleep.

Travelers heading east may be able to take melatonin effectively because you are visiting a time zone where you need to go to bed earlier than normal. But you need to remember that jet lag is not only caused by disruption to circadian rhythms, it is also affected by factors such as dehydration, lack of exercise, and poor diet. Also, the exact dose of melatonin is important and you should follow directions to make sure you don’t end up overly drowsy when you should be awake.
