The Do’s and Don’ts of ER Visits

January 26, 2013 by Chiranth Nataraj

The ER (Emergency Room) is not such a comfortable place where you should take as your relaxation center. You don’t have to take all cases to the ER at all time as it is a serious place. Many people have even formed the habit of taking every ache and pain that happen to them to the ER after the normal business hours of the doctor. ER visit is a serious issue that must not be taken lightly at all. Therefore, don’t visit the emergency room if your case is such a minor one that can still be managed until the arrival of your doctor in the next office day.

On the other hand, you may have no other option than to visit the ER. Again, don’t abstain from ER visit if the need of rushing to the ER comes up. Nevertheless, you must put into consideration few things before your ER visit. Don’t rush out of the house without taking your identification card and your proof of health insurance along with you as you will need certain documentation before you can be attended to in the ER. If need be, do call your insurance company prior to your ER visit. This will be taken care of, if your insurance company is one that needs pre-authorization.

Furthermore, you need to take few moments to watch your condition before heading for the ER. However, it is not in all situations that you have to wait and see if there will be improvement. Hence, for stomach problem or bad cold, the best approach is for you to use whatever over the counter medications that will suppress the condition until your primary care doctor is available. This does not depend on when you have noticed the symptoms or how bad such symptoms are.
However, if your case is severe as you will experience in bleeding, severe trauma, signs of stroke or heart attack, head injuries, excessive fever over 105 degrees and loss of consciousness, it is recommended that you call 911 or visit your local ER immediately. This is for you to get immediate attention in a timely manner, which can make the difference, even with many traumatic issues.
Do not head to the ER if you can still manage the situation to wait and see your physician. This idea of visiting the doctor instead of ER visit is a good idea. It is also excellent to book an appointment with your doctor in a nice calm relaxed manner as against the stressful and busy ER.
