Finding an Affordable Health Insurance

February 18, 2013 by Chiranth Nataraj

Looking for affordable health insurance is easier said than done, most especially if you have a pre-existing condition or it is without an employer-sponsored program. According to a study in Harvard University, it was noted that according to statistics, your family is just a severe illness away from bankruptcy. It was also concluded from the same research that in 2007, health problems were responsible for 62 percent of all personal bankruptcies in the United States and 78 percent of these filers were with their medical insurance at the beginning of their illness.

The number of people from the above statistics alone should encourage you to get health insurance or even increase your present coverage, if you really love yourself. Shopping around is the key to finding affordable health insurance coverage. A lot of smaller businesses do not offer health insurance benefits, while the best alternative which is also the least expensive is participating in your employer’s insurance program.

As pointed out at the beginning of this article, it is difficult to find affordable health insurance if you have a pre-existing condition or it is without an employer-sponsored program. The average premium cost to the employee in an employer sponsored health care program was about $4,100, according to the Kaiser/HRET survey.

However, health insurance has become a luxury that only few people can afford getting and yet, even a minimal policy is better than having no coverage, with the rising co-payments, dropped coverage’s and yearly deductibles. In the hospital, the cost for one day can range between $985 and $2,696. Minimal coverage can provide some monetary benefit for your hospital stay, even if you have one.

Approximately 48 million Americans are without insurance coverage, as the health care debate continues in Washington. Regarding health care benefits, find out from your employer and ask of any occupational association you belong to regarding possible group health insurance coverage.
