April 25, 2013 by Chiranth Nataraj

For many people planning to visit their loved ones in the US, getting a visa is nothing short of a nightmare. The visa application process is a complicated one, with a great number of conditions and requirements. There are several steps to apply for a US visa:

First, you will need to complete the online visa application form and take the printed confirmation to your visa interview. While completing your online DS-160 form, you will need to upload your photo, which must be in the format explained on the website. Once you have submitted your visa application form, you will need to schedule an appointment for your visa interview at a US embassy in your country. Remember, wait times for interview appointments are long, so apply for your visa early. You may need to pay the visa application fee before your interview, check the instructions on the website about fee payment. Before your visa interview, gather the required documents such as your passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the US, your DS – 160 form, application fee receipt and your photo. If you are qualified, some additional documentation may also be required, such as evidence of the purpose of your trip, your intent to leave the US after your trip and your ability to pay for your trip costs.

During your visa interview, a consular officer will decide if you are qualified to get a visa, and if so, the visa category that is appropriate for your purpose of travel. Digital finger print scans will be taken during your interview after which, your application will be sent for administrative processing. Once your visa is approved, you may be asked to pay a visa issuance fee as applicable to your nationality. To play it safe, do not make final travel plans or book your tickets till you are issued a visa and secure your trip to the US with visitor insurance.
